 Aug 13, 2024
Smartmatic co-founder and president Roger Piñate, 49, was arrested on Monday for committing bribery and money laundering in order to receive election contracts in the Philippines. Jorge Miguel Vasquez, 62, the voting machine company's former VP of hardware development, was also arrested on Monday. Piñate posted an $8.5 million dollar bond and was released. Vasquez was released on a $1 million bond.

According to the indictment, Piñate found the money for the bribes by overcharging for the voting machines. According to prosecutors, Smartmatic executives used coded language regarding this slush fund used for bribes. They created fraudulent contracts and fake loan agreements.
Piñate and Vazquez then allegedly laundered the funds through bank accounts in Asia, Europe, and the United States, including in Florida.
Smartmatic's contracts in the Philippines for voting machines and other services were worth $199 million during the May 2016 election.

Piñate and Vasquez are charged, along with two other defendants, with one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and three counts of international laundering of monetary instruments. Colorado Man Sentenced To Prison For Attempting to Cast Multiple Ballots
June 12, 2024

Robert Anzulewicz, 41, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, pleaded guilty on June 4 to mail-in ballot election fraud, a misdemeanor. He will serve 20 days in jail and two years of probation. He attempted to vote three times in the 2022 general election in Routt County. Anzulewicz attempted to vote with his own mail-in ballot, by forging another person’s mail-in ballot, and by voting in person.

Fmr President of Atlantic City Council Arrested For Fraudulent Mail-In Ballots
February 1, 2024

Craig Callaway, 64, a former president of the City Council of Atlantic City, was arrested today for voter fraud during the November 8, 2022 election. The charges include one count of depriving, defrauding, and attempting to deprive and defraud the residents of the state of New Jersey of a fair and impartially conducted election process by the fraudulent procurement, casting, and tabulation of ballots. Callaway will make his initial appearance today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew J. Skahill in Camden federal court.

Approximately one month before the Nov. 8 election, Callaway and others working for Callaway approached people in Atlantic City, promising to pay them $30 to $50 to act as "authorized" messengers for voters who supposedly wanted to vote by mail.
After receiving Vote-By-Mail applications from Callaway or his subordinates, these messengers entered the Atlantic County clerk’s office with one to four completed Vote-By-Mail applications. As instructed by Callaway or his subordinates, these individuals provided the county clerk’s office staff proof of identification and signed the Vote-By-Mail applications in the authorized messenger portion, then handed the signed applications in. If the applications were approved, the messengers received mail-in ballots for the voters listed on the applications.
New Jersey law requires that messengers deliver mail-in ballots directly to the voters. However, Callaway's messengers instead handed the ballots to Callaway or his subordinates. Many of these mail-in ballots were cast in the names of people who say that they did not vote in the 2022 general election. The charge of procuring, casting, and tabulating fraudulent ballots can carry a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric A. Boden, Attorney in Charge of the Trenton Branch Office, and Assistant U.S. Attorney James H. Graham of the Organized Crime and Gangs Unit, under the supervision of the Special Prosecutions Division.

New Jersey City Council President Indicted for Voter Fraud
October 25, 2023

State Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced today that the Paterson City Council President, Alex Mendez, is charged with election fraud. Investigators determined that the defendant personally collected ballots and oversaw the fraudulent mailing of ballots. Members of his campaign stole ballots from residential mailboxes and discarded several that did not cast a vote for their candidate. Mendez and his co-conspirators are also accused of tampering with witnesses to avoid prosecution.

Mendez, 48, of Paterson, New Jersey, was first indicted on election fraud charges in 2021. He now faces additional charges with several co-conspirators: his wife, Yohanny Mendez, 48; Omar Ledesma, 35; and Iris Rigo, 38, all Paterson residents. The charges resulted from an investigation by the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability.
Mendez and his associates are accused of unlawfully collecting ballots and tampering with ballots to give him an unfair edge in the race for the Third Ward seat on the Paterson City Council. Mendez also apparently tried to undermine the investigation, including witness tampering.
The investigation began when the U.S. Postal Inspection Service alerted the Attorney General’s office that hundreds of mail-in ballots for the May 2020 Paterson municipal election were in a mailbox in Haledon, New Jersey. Hundreds of mail-in ballots were also found in a mailbox in Paterson. This was during the COVID shutdown.

In addition, according to the charges, Mendez personally collected mail-in ballots from households in Paterson, in violation of the Vote-By-Mail law. He and his associates allegedly collected many ballots in the Third Ward over several days.
New Jersey law allows a voter to give a completed ballot to a “bearer.” However, the law states that a candidate is never permitted to serve as a ballot bearer in the district in which he is a candidate.

Apparently many of the ballots that the campaign collected were not sealed by voters. And, allegedly, the ballots that were brought to Mendez’s campaign headquarters were examined to see if they were votes for Mendez. If they were not, Mendez's wife, Yohanny Mendez, allegedly would destroy the ballots and replace them with other mail-in ballots that did select Mendez for the council seat.
The investigation found that the blank ballots used as replacement ballots were obtained by stealing ballots out of voters’ mailboxes. Mendez associate Omar Ledesma is accused of taking ballots out of mailboxes in specific neighborhoods that were known to support Mendez’s main opponent, former Paterson Councilman William McKoy.

It is also alleged that if a voter turned over an incomplete ballot, campaign workers would complete it.
Investigators say that Mendez was observed coming out of his wife’s car with a large, heavy bag filled with ballots. He then emptied the bag into the Haledon mailbox.

They also say that, after Mendez was indicted on February 24, 2021, Mendez, his wife, and others were captured in an audio recording planning to contact the witnesses against Alex Mendez and propose a new statement that the witnesses would give that would be helpful to the defense.

Tallahassee Woman Arrested for Using 11 Dead People’s Names On Forms
April 19, 2024

Just two weeks ago, another woman, Krisharia Williams of Quincy, Florida, faced similar charges. Williams is accused of submitting hundreds of invalid ballot petition forms to the Leon County Supervisor of Elections office. She allegedly signed signatures for two dead people.
The two women, President and Williams, worked for the same company, Grassfire LLC. The two were collecting signatures for the ballot amendment “Limited Authorization of Casino Gaming.”

Alabama State Representative Arrested for Election Fraud
August 29, 2023

Rep. David Cole (pictured above), was arrested Tuesday on a charge of election fraud for voting at an unauthorized location, a Class C felony. Cole is also under investigation by the Alabama Attorney General’s Office.

Cole lives in District 4, but he used the address of a family friend to run for office, and apparently to vote, in District 10. One of his recent opponents, Elijah Boyd, filed a challenge based on Cole’s residency.
As part of that election challenge, Cole had to sit for a deposition and answer questions about his residency and about his apparently falsified documents showing him living in District 10 one year prior to last November’s general election.

Iowa Woman Sentenced to Eight Months for Voter Fraud
April 1, 2024

Kim Taylor was found guilty of 52 counts of voter fraud and was sentenced to four months in prison and four months in home confinement.
Prosecutors proved that Ms. Taylor illegally filled out voting materials, did not translate warnings that her victims could not vote for family members, and forged signatures on voting affidavits. She did this during the 2020 primary election when her husband unsuccessfully ran for Iowa’s 4th U.S. Congressional District, and during the 2020 general election, when her husband was elected to the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors.
Her husband was not charged, and still is a member of the Board of Supervisors.

Arizona Election Worker Arrested for Election Tampering
June 24, 2024

Maricopa County detectives arrested Walter Ringfield, Jr., a 27-year-old Phoenix resident, on Friday. He is charged with one count of theft and one count of criminal damage. He allegedly stole keys and a security fob that can be used to gain access to the county’s ballot tabulation machines. He is in custody and won’t be released unless a court order allows.

Ringfield claimed that he took the fob for 20 minutes the day before and then gave it back. But detectives found the fob in his house after obtaining a search warrant.
Walter Ringfield Sr. said that his son recently graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in political science.
Ringfield, Jr. had previously been charged with theft after an incident in July 2023, but he entered a diversion program and was not convicted.
The security breach means that the county must now reprogram its machines and security fobs at a cost of $19,000. County officials will also redo the pre-election logic and accuracy testing.
County staff noticed on Friday morning that the lanyard was missing. Surveillance video from Thursday evening showed Ringfield putting the red wrist lanyard containing the key and fob into the right pocket of his shorts while working in the tabulation center.

Florida Woman Arrested For Voter Fraud
Sept 29, 2023

Marsha Ervin, 69, of Tallahassee was arrested Friday on felony voter fraud charges. She is accused of falsely claiming she was eligible to vote in Florida in 2020 and 2022. She was not eligible because she was a convicted felon on probation.
She was charged with one count of submission of false voter registration information and two counts of voting as an unqualified elector.
The Florida Office of Election Crimes and Security provided the Department of Law Enforcement with evidence that she voted in the 2020 General Election.

Back in October 2016, when Ervin was convicted of a second-degree felony, she signed a Plea and Acknowledgement of Rights form that stated, “I understand that a plea to a felony causes me to lose certain rights, including the right to vote and possess firearms.”
On September 29 2020, Ervin registered for the 2020 General Election. She affirmed that she was a U.S. citizen who met the eligibility requirements of the state. She was mailed a voter information card the following month on October 7. Ervin voted in-person on October 19. Ervin also voted by mail in the 2022 Primary Election.

Former Milwaukee Election Official Convicted of Election Fraud
March 20, 2024

Kimberly Zapata, the former deputy director of the Milwaukee Election Commission, was found guilty of election fraud involving absentee ballots. She was also found guilty of misconduct in public office, a felony. She admitted that she used fake names to request military absentee ballots in 2022.

Zapata was in charge of early voting, absentee voting, and voter registration for Milwaukee. In November 2022, city authorities fired her and charged her with the crimes. She faces up to three-and-a-half years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the felony charge, and an additional six months in prison and $1000 for each election fraud charge.
She requested fake military ballots through the My Vote Wisconsin website from her work laptop on October 25, 2022. Her attorney claimed that Zapata was acting as a whistleblower and was highlighting the need to change Wisconsin’s absentee voting system. The prosecutor said that the way to raise a concern is to release information, not commit a crime.
